Roland Vidal :

«The landscape construction of a territorial identity:
Imaginary and reality in a Brittany seaside resort: Sables-d'Or-les-Pins (Côtes-d'Armor)»

Abstract

The wide stabilisation campaigns of the French littoral, ending in the XIXth century, produce new building lands near the beaches just when the seaside resorts vogue reveals a new utility to them.

Established on malleable grounds favourable to a tabula rasa, and organised to optimise the relation with the beach, hundreds of these stations are built on an orthogonal town-planning which tends to be always the same one.

Conceived as a seaside city-park, Sables-d'Or-les-Pins belongs to the rare exceptions.

Established with complex relationship toward its territory, it is the work of an original contractor with the partnership of two landscape-architects who conceive their plan as a new organisation of the territory.

The assumption that I want to check is that a know-how and a sensitivity of landscape-architect are able to contribute to the durable construction of a territorial identity.
